January 2019

I woke up today thinking, “Wow, it’s February.” January felt really long and really short all at the same time. I want to keep a small record – a journal of sorts – for this year. Nothing too crazy, just a once a month public check-in on what happened in the month, how I did with my goals, and some reflections.

My one little word for this year is craft and I have some goals associated with that word (you can read all about it here).

I’m still feeling good about my word. It appeared in my life in a variety of unexpected ways in January. I got into the habit of making fresh bread every week last year and in January, I experimented with French bread (turned out pretty good) and bagels (so amazingly easy!). The bagels have captured my attention and I’ve already made them 3 times, each batch better than the last. I’ve come up with solutions at work that never occurred to me before, which are going to make a lot of things easier as we take on new projects – a result of focusing deeply without distractions on my coding. I wrote more in January than I have in a long time and I’m really pleased with what’s coming of it. My relationship with the skills and hobbies that matter to me are deepening, and it feels good to approach them with a craft mindset.

I’ve also made some good progress in my goals:

  1. Health – The first part of the month I couldn’t get myself to do anything and I felt like I was going to fail before I had already started. However, I found my groove in the second half and have done some sort of physical activity every single day for two weeks. This has definitely impacted my energy levels and sleeping habits – I’m waking up more consistently in the morning without feeling gross and lethargic and I’m in bed and asleep by 11pm almost every night. I tend to get depressed and blue during winter because of the lack of outdoorsy activities, but I’m feeling good because of the effort I’ve made.
  2. Career – I’ve been very focussed on getting good amounts of work done without distractions this month. Not every day is a good day, but there are more good days than bad ones. This is a much larger work in progress, but I think if I keep at it, I’m going to be honing my skills really well and getting into a good rhythm with work.
  3. Travel – We’ve booked our trip to Pakistan! We’ll be going for 2 weeks in March to visit family on both Saad’s side and my own. It should be a good and interesting trip. I’m hoping to see some sights as well, although that is not the primary goal of this trip. We’ll be travelling to a few different cities, some that I haven’t visited since I was very little. However it plays out, it’s going to be exciting!
  4. Relationships – I haven’t really done much in this department. I’ve made it a goal but we’ll see how this plays out. Right now enjoying my current friendships and working on my other goals feels more important than trying to make new friends in the city. Stay tuned.

In January, I’ve:

..made fresh pasta that was so delicious.

..made myself a homemade mocha latte without a latte machine.

..written 8 blog posts.

..finished 1 book.

..baked crunchy french bread.

..begun to sort out and curate my closet.

..done more yoga than ever before.

..eaten sushi with the siblings.

..started to knit a new throw blanket.

..done way too many loads of laundry.

..made an egg pudding for the first time.

It’s been a good first month of the year. Now onto February.
